about

City Lights
In a big city you can’t avoid other people. This song was written before the pandemic, and even pre-covid, I sensed people's stress through veiled aggressions that signalled to me a greater turbulence being felt inside the walls. The unnatural modes we have established for our urban existence, and the chains of upward mobility that surround us in the city, keep us feeling uptight. This song is about the strain of city living.

lyrics

City Lights

City lights in our eyes
Don’t need no sun
Don’t need no one
Just gimme what I want
City lights Monday morn
From the day you’re born
Too proud
Or too bold
To come out of the cold

You don’t have to prove yourself to me
I’m looking at you
Do you see me
You don’t have to prove yourself to me
But when it comes down to it

We’re uptight
But we don’t fight
Takes all my might
To stay upright

City lights hit my soul
White knuckling on the payroll
On parole, on patrol
You tell yourself you’re in control

You don’t have to prove yourself to me
I’m looking at you
Do you see me
You don’t have to prove yourself to me
When it comes down to it

We’re uptight
But we don’t fight
Takes all my might
To stay upright

You don’t have to prove yourself to me
But when it comes down to it

We’re uptight
But we don’t fight
Takes all my might
To stay upright
